In this work, I was inhabiting a picture and revivifying the person from the source photo. The resulting images are records of that action.
The work was shown in the late 1980s in solo exhibitions at the Tartt Gallery in Washington, D.C.
and Zoe Gallery in Boston, MA. The pictures were color coupler prints (color prints from color negatives)
printed 19 x 15″ on 20 x 16″ sheets, offered in an edition of 5 with one artist’s proof. I have recently
reprinted them as smaller digital archival inkjet prints, 9 x 10.5″ on 14 x 11″ sheets. I have not declared an edition.
Over the years since I made these pictures, interpretations of copyright laws have been revised due to successful lawsuits, and I am now not particularly concerned about these pictures being challenged. When I was making them, I kept extensive notes on the source photos. However, I have yet to be able to find those notes, which are somewhere in my storage space in NYC. Some of the source photos are well known, but others are more obscure. Hence the note “Information on source photo coming soon” accompanying some of the images.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has two of the images, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has one.
